The C-peptide test reveals how well the body produces insulin

The C-peptide test is a tool your doctor uses to test if you have type 1 diabetes, when the immune system attacks and destroys cells in the pancreas, or type 2, when your body is not using insulin properly. This analysis shows how well your body produces insulin. Which transports sugar, or "glucose," from your blood to your cells, and the test can help your doctor determine whether you need to take insulin to control your condition, according to a webmed report.

Where does peptide-C come from?

Beta cells in the pancreas make insulin during this process. These cells also release C-peptide.This substance doesn't actually affect blood sugar, but your doctor can measure the level of this to help them figure out how much insulin you are making.

Reasons for taking the test

Doctors don't use it to actually diagnose diabetes, but it can give them a reading to help treat it, it can tell the difference between the insulin your body is producing and the insulin you have taken because only the insulin made by the pancreas is associated with cpeptide.

Diseases detected by C-peptide analysis

To find out if you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes

When you have Type 1 and your doctor needs to know how much insulin your pancreas is still producing.

To find out if it is time to initiate insulin in a patient with type 2 diabetes.

To find out the cause of low blood sugar.

To diagnose an insulin-releasing pancreatic tumor called an insulinoma.

If you have had your pancreas removed.

Methods of preparing for the analysis

You may need to stop eating 8 to 10 hours before the test. Sometimes this is done after eating. Tell your doctor about any medications you are taking. Include prescription drugs and those you buy without a prescription, such as herbal supplements or vitamins, usually. What the C-peptide test uses is a sample of your blood. As for the urine test, you will urinate in a cup as instructed. For a 24-hour sample, you will need to collect everything you produce in one day.

Analysis results

You should get your results in a few days. The normal C-peptide range ranges from 0.5 to 2.0 nanograms per milliliter. These levels can be high when your body produces more insulin than usual levels are low when your body is producing less than it should.

High C-peptide rates:

High rates of analysis mean that a person has insulin resistance, meaning that his body does not use it as well as it should. If he has type 2 diabetes, his insulin levels may be high.

Or infection with a tumor called insulinoma, or infection with kidney disease

The elevated level may also show that a person is taking too much of a certain class of medication to treat type 2 diabetes.

A low C-peptide level might mean that:

You have type 1 or type 2 diabetes with a tired pancreas or more advanced disease.

You are taking insulin injections, and it prevents the secretion of insulin from the pancreas.

You have low blood sugar, so your pancreas stops making insulin or you are taking insulin so the pancreas doesn't release anything.

The treatment reduced the size of your insulin tumor.
